 Artificial Intelligence -


It is a branch of Computer Science named Artificial Intelligence pursues creating the computers or machines as intelligent as human beings. Computer science defines AI research as the study of "Intelligent agents" so that any devices that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of successfully achieving its goals.

According to the father of Artificial Intelligence John McCarthy, it is "The science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs". 

Such systems may have the capability of visual perception, speech recognition, natural language processing and they may also be able to make decisions and perform tasks without human intervention to drive efficiency, improve quality and better manage supply chains. 

Industrial AI's Impact on Manufacturing - 

1. Generative design : Manufacturers can also make use of AI in the design phase. Designers and engineers can make use of an AI algorithm, generally referred to as generative design software, to explore all the possible configurations of a solution. 

The brief can include restrictions and proposed solutions can then be tested using machine learning, offering additional insight as to which designs works best. The process can be repeated until an optimal design solution is reached.

2. Predictive maintenance : Instead of performing maintenance according to a predetermined schedule, predictive maintenance uses advanced AI algorithms in the form of machine learning and artificial neural networks to formulate predictions regarding asset malfunction. After that it alerts personnel focused maintenance procedures to prevent the failure, but not too early so as to waste downtime unnecessarily. 

3. Market adaptation/Supply chain : In this, for constructing estimations of market demand, we can use an algorithm account demand patterns categorized by date, location, socio-economic attributes, macro-economic behavior, political status, weather patterns etc. This information is invaluable to manufacturers as it allows them to optimize staffing, inventory control, energy consumption and the supply of raw materials. 

4. Human-robot collaboration : According to the IFR (International Federation of Robotics) there will be 1.3 million industrial robots (by end of 2018) working in factories around the world. As the adoption of robotics increases in manufacturing, AI will play a major part in ensuring the safety of human personnel as well as giving robots more responsibility to make decisions. 

5. Quality 4.0 : It enables manufacturers to continually improve the quality of their output by collecting data about the use and performance of their products in the field. This information can be poweful to product development teams in making both strategic and tectical engineering decisions. 


Goals of AI - 

The ultimate aim of artificial intelligence research is the technological singularity - the point at which technology overtake the human. 

To Create Expert Systems : The systems which exihibit intelligent behavior, learn, demonstrated, explain and advice its user. 

● To Implement Human Intelligence in Machines : Creating systems that understand, think, learn and behave like humans. 


Uses of Artificial Intelligence in the world

There are some applications of AI which is given below :- 

Handwriting Recognition : The handwriting recognition software reads the text written on paper by a pen or on screen by a stylus. It can recognize the shapes of the letters and convert it into  editable text. 

Speech Recognition : It is the intelligent system which is capable of hearing and knowing the human language in terms of sentences and their meanings while a person talks to it. 

Healthcare : By using AI in healthcare, Managing Medical Records, Doing Repetitive jobs (like X-rays, CT scan), Treatment Design, Virtual Nurses, Drug Creation, Health Monitoring, Healthcare System Analysis are done easily and with an accurate result. The precision of machine learning can also detect diseases such as cancer sooner, thus saving lives.

Gaming : AI plays role in strategic games such as chess, poker, tic-tac-toe, etc, where machine can think of large number of possible positions based on heuristic knowledge.

Manufacturing Sector : By using AI in the manufaturing sector the Inspections, supervision, modifications, and communication can be automated, the value-added manufacturing process is heterogeneous decentralized, flexible and also smart naufacturing is characterized by preventive actions and adaptive production. 

Intelligent Robots : Robots are capable of learning from their mistakes and they can also adapt new environment and able to perform the tasks given by a human. They can also sensors to detect physical data from the real world such as light, heat, temperature, movement, sound, bump, and pressure.


Types of AI

Artificial Intelligence can be divided in various types. Based on the functionality of AI-based systems, AI can be categorized into the following types:

1)   Reactive Machine AI 

2)   Limited Memory AI 

3)   Theory Of Mind AI 

4)   Self-aware AI 


1. Reactive Machine AI -

This type of AI includes machines that operate solely based on the present data, taking into account only the current situation. Reactive AI machines cannot form the data to evaluate their future actions. They can perform a narrowed range of predefined tasks. 

An example of Reactive AI is the famous IBM Chess program that beat the  world champion, Garry Kasparov. 


2. Limited Memory AI - 

Like the name suggests Limited Memory AI, can make informed and improved decisions by studying that past data from its memory. Such an AI has a short-lived or a temporary memory that can be used to store past experiences and hence evaluate future actions. 

Self-driving cars are Limited Memory AI, that uses the data collected in the recent past to make immediate decisions. For example, self-driving cars use sensors to identify civilians crossing the road, steep roads, traffic signals and so on to make better driving decisions. This helps to prevent any future accidents. 


3. Theory Of Mind AI - 

The Theory of Mind AI is a more advanced type of Artificial Intelligence. This category of machines is speculated to play a major role in psychology. This type of AI will focus mainly on emotional intelligence so that human believes and thoughts can be better comprehended. 


4. Self Aware AI -

In this type of AI machines have their own consciousness and become self-aware. This type of AI is a little far fatched given the present circumstances. However, in the future, achieving a stage of super intelligence might be possible.
